WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State ended West Texas A&M's Lone Star Conference unbeaten run with a 61-49 victory at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Thursday night.
Hannah Reynolds collected her second double-double of the season while
Frances King led both teams with 21 points.
"That was us tonight," said Head Coach
Christopher Reay. "They did miss some shots, but a lot of that was our physicality and aggressiveness. That was our fundamental defense."
WT's Taylor Williams turned in the first bucket of the game after clinching a steal. However, MSU was able to respond quickly and went on a 10-0 run for the next six minutes of the quarter.
Shawnisay Millar posted three points in the streak and concluded the game with six. The junior grabbed six boards and one block. Williams led the Lady Buffs with 16 points on the night, going 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. The guard added five steals and one assist.
West Texas A&M secured two more baskets to tally six points in the first quarter while the Mustangs soared ahead with 12.
The second period saw more offensive action between the two teams. Haylei Janssens secured four of the Lady Buffs' nine-point performance. The junior closed with seven points, going 3-of-8 from the field. Janssens posted a team-high nine boards.
Morgan Lenahan shone for Midwestern State as the guard collected five tallies through the second quarter. Lenahan was 3-of-4 from the free-throw line and donned seven boards and four assists.
Going into half, MSU led WT 28-15. The visitors saw just 14 percent shooting from the floor and were 0-of-11 from range for the first 20 minutes of play. Through two quarters, the home side shot 40 percent from the field and were 1-of-4 from behind the arc.
King and Reynolds spurred the Mustangs to a 20-point third quarter. King drained nine points while Reynolds added seven. Reynolds finished the night with 10 points and 11 rebounds to claim the double-double performance. The forward is only eight tallies away from reaching the 1,000-point club and five blocks from setting the 200 mark.
On the other side of the court, Karley Motschenbache recorded six of her 11 points in the third period. The freshman guard turned in 6-of-10 from the charity stripe and added seven boards.
In the final quarter of play, MSU struggled on the offensive side.
Markayla Johnson clinched the only field goal of the quarter for the Mustangs, registering two of her six-point performance. The guard was 2-for-4 from the floor and carried two blocks.
The team did excel from the line, draining 11-of-14 free throws.
Though the Lady Buffs carried a 6-0 run over the final two minutes of play, they could not overcome the Mustangs. This was the only quarter that the visitors outscored MSU, turning in a 21-13 differential. WT turned in their best shooting performance, going 35 percent from the field and 57 percent from distance.
Madison Kast added four points and two steals in West Texas A&M's first Lone Star Conference loss.
