Mustangs fall 86-60 at UT Tyler in LSC opener

TYLER, Texas -- Midwestern State drops their third straight contest as Yasmine Sifaoui inks a career-high 13 points in an 86-60 road loss at UT Tyler. The Mustangs sit at 5-5 for the season and are denied a point in their first Lone Star Conference game of the year.
 
Sifaoui led MSU right from the get-go, earning five points in the first quarter. She added four rebounds to keep the visitors astray by only four points after the first ten minutes. As a team, the Mustangs shot 31 percent from the floor.
 
The Patriots went 63 percent from the floor and were 50 percent from range, led by Lovisa Hevinder with six points. Liah Davis collected four rebounds while Kelsey Crouse notched three assists.
 
The Mustangs took a second quarter slump and recorded only eight points. UTT held MSU scoreless over five minutes and went on a 14-3 run for 5:33 during the period. Shots did not fall for Midwestern State as they shot 15 percent from the floor and 11 percent from deep.
 
Morgan Lenahan knocked down her first points of the match with a three from deep. She posted 12 points in the contest and added three rebounds and two assists.
 
Martina Machalova went 2-3 from the floor and converted on all four free throws for nine points. As a team, the home side continued their sharp shooting, going 53 percent from the field and 60 percent from range. The Patriots led by 19 going into halftime even after occurring 12 turnovers.
 
MSU bounced back in the third quarter with an early 6-0 run over UT Tyler. Both teams shot 50 percent from the floor, draining eight of 16 attempts though the Mustangs outscored the Patriots 23-21. Sheridan Bostic knocked down two from beyond the arc in her eight-point total. Hannah Reynolds went two of three from the field and added a free throw.
 
With a 25-16 advantage in the final quarter, UTT took the game home. Markayla Johnson collected five points and concluded the game with seven and three boards. The Patriots posted a 64 percent shooting and went 67 percent on threes. Sifaoui led the Mustangs with eight boards and Frances King recorded four assists and five points.
 
Hevinder wrapped up with a game-best 29 points converting 9-of-12 from the arc. She also notched ten of 13 attempts from the floor. Crouse led with ten assists and Davis earned 12 rebounds.
 
Midwestern State returns to D.L. Ligon Coliseum for more LSC action on Thursday, Jan. 6. The Mustangs face the St. Edward's Hilltoppers with a tip-off time of 5:30 p.m. All streaming and ticket options are available online at MSUMustangs.com
