Mustangs put three past Greyhounds to take home first LSC win of 2021

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State goes 1-0-1 in Lone Star Conference play after defeating Eastern New Mexico 3-0 at Stang Park. Lexi Beck, Marissa Resendez and Hayden Zuniga all tallied their name on the score sheet during the Wednesday night match. The Mustangs are now 4-2-1 on the season.

MSU and ENM played to a 0-0 draw in the first half, but battled still the same. Katey Stice notched the first shot of the game in the tenth minute for the Greyhounds and had two tries all-together. Cassidy Savoy and Kelly Cannistra each had two attempts by 23:11. Savoy created five chances in the match and placed two shots on goal while Cannistra had two total attempts.

Midwestern State's closest try came in the 44th minute when Isabella Cruz's long range shot bounced off the crossbar and just narrowly missed going in the goal. Cruz tallied three total shots over 37 minutes on the field.

The Mustangs outshot ENM nine to three in the first half while Taylor Camp and Whitney Dockweiler each registered a save for their team.

Beck registered her goal early in the second half. Her 51st minute tally came after the ball bounced around in Eastern New Mexico's box. Beck and Savoy recorded block shots before Beck tipped the ball away from the defender and sliced it into the bottom left corner. This was the midfielder's second goal of the year and fourth accumulated point.

Emilia Nunez's long run from midfield into the opposition's box helped set up Resendez's first collegiate goal. Nunez dribbled towards her defender at the top of the 18-yard box and dished out to Beck on her left. Beck then put the ball across the goal where Resendez was waiting, unmarked, at the far post for an easy tap in. The 63rd minute tally put the home side up by two.

Nunez also helped set up the third and final goal when her shot rebounded off the arm of a Greyhound defender to lead to a Mustang penalty kick. Zuniga stepped up to the spot and smoothly sent the ball above the outstretched hands of Dockweiler. The 77:24 mark sealed the deal for Midwestern State.

Eastern New Mexico drew some dangerous free kicks in the second half, but MSU defended well to keep the shutout. Overall, the Mustangs completed 22 shots and landed ten on frame. ENM put up eight attempts and guided two to goal. Camp made two saves on the night while Dockwiler managed seven.

Midwestern State hits the road on Saturday for another Lone Star Conference match. The Mustangs take on St. Mary's in San Antonio, Texas, at Sigma Beta Chi Field on Saturday, Oct. 2. Kick off is set for 5 p.m.
