Heaton's golden goal lifts MSU past St. Mary's, 1-0

SAN ANTONIO -- Randi Heaton strikes again as she notches the second overtime game winner of the season, this time coming against St. Mary's. Midwestern State maintain their undefeated Lone Star Conference record at 2-0-1 and sit overall at 5-2-1.
 
The Rattlers outshot the Mustangs in both halves, totaling eight attempts in the first. MSU put up four tries with Marissa Resendez grabbing two. The sophomore earned her first start of the season and played for 43 minutes.
 
Eliza Merrion recorded three of her four shots in the first half. The forward totaled 77 minutes on the pitch.
 
Taylor Camp notched one save in the first period and Rebecca Difronzo made two for STMU. The score was still at the draw as the two teams headed into halftime.
 
Lexi Beck registered three attempts in the second half to put St. Mary's on their heels. The freshman midfielder had five tries and landed three on goal. Emilia Nunez added two to the offensive threat. In total, Midwestern State rocketed six attempts at the Rattlers' goal.
 
The home side sent 12 kicks toward goal in period two. Miranda Narvaez landed five of her seven shots in the attempt to find the first notch of the match. Difronzo helped out by making two more saves between the posts to conclude with four.
 
Camp collected five saves in the later half to total six on the match. After the final whistle, the squads headed into overtime.
 
Heaton smashed her goal in the 92nd minute on a helper by Emma Baley to clinch the game for the Mustangs. Heaton collects her fourth career tally while Baley earns her seventh helper.
 
Midwestern State continues their road trip with a stop in Oklahoma City, Okla. The Mustangs will face Oklahoma Christian in a mid-week Lone Star Conference match at Eagle Soccer Field. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 6.
