Three bring glee as MSU routs Lubbock Christian in shutout

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State bounced back with a fury and earned a 3-0 victory against Lubbock Christian Wednesday night at Stang Park. Trevor Amann, Mere Escobar and Brandon Martinez-Trelles each collected a goal for the Mustangs. With the win, MSU moves on to a 7-1 record for the 2021 season.

Though Midwestern State had the upper hand with four shots to one in the first half, neither team could find the back of the net. Kevin Mejias had the only attempt for LCU in the first 45 minutes. Martinez-Trelles tested Braxton Thorne in the 38th minute but Thorne completed the save. Marc-Antoine Huzen did not make any saves for the Mustangs.

The second half was full of excitement as Amann registered his seventh goal of the year and 19th in his career. The 50th minute mark gave MSU the lead over the Chaps.

Escobar doubled the lead less than ten minutes later when a cleared ball fell directly to his feet at the top of Lubbock Christian's 18-yard box. The forward pushed the ball to the side and buried it past Thorne. The goal was Escobar's fourth of the season and ninth overall. The sophomore has nine points for 2021 and 19 in his two years at MSU.

Martinez-Trelles made the trifecta with his 70:38 tally. Julian Barajas settled a long ball from a teammate and turned to run at the Chaparrals' back line. The midfielder dished the ball out to Martinez-Trelles at the top of the box and from there the senior slid it into the bottom corner of the net. Martinez-Trelles collected his first Mustang goal while Barajas has his third helper of the season.

MSU rode out the rest of the game and Huzen notched his fifth shutout this year. On the match, the Mustangs put up nine shots with five landing on target. LCU grabbed two shots and two saves.

Midwestern State completes their last match before starting Lone Star conference play. The team takes on Oklahoma Christian in Oklahoma City, Okla., on Saturday, Oct. 2. Kick off is set for 7 p.m. at Eagle Soccer Field.
