Mustangs take a set from No. 2 Angelo State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State fell to 3-8 (0-1 LSC) on the season after falling to No. 2 Angelo State on Friday night by 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 16-25, 16-25). Lauryn Bourne led the Mustangs with 12 kills in the match at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

Set one was a close battle between MSU and ASU with 11 ties and four lead changes. Level at 22, Angleo State claimed the final three points to take home the 25-22 win. Bourne registered four of her 12 kills in the set and totaled 11 digs with a .281 hitting percent. Elsa Lamphere led both teams with 15 kills and 16.5 points.

As a team, Midwestern State completed 11 kills and one aces while Angelo State made 15 put downs.

Set two was the Mustangs' time to shine as there were only three ties and one lead change in their 25-22 victory. Autumn Roach and Regan Willms each grabbed 16 assists and one kill on the match with Roach adding a service ace. Kailyn Gilbreath made 26 assists for the Belles.

In the second set, MSU recorded 12 kills and one ace while ASU made 12 kills and added five attack errors.

In the third set, Midwestern State trailed Angelo State for almost the entirety of the set. The Belles walked away with a 25-16 win to gain a 2-1 lead. Lissette Lefforge put up four blocks on the night with two solo and two assists. The senior also smashed seven kills and an ace. Baleigh Allen served two solo blocks and five block assists for ASU.

Angelo State led the Mustangs 13 kills to 10 and pushed two service aces. MSU's two ball handling errors hurt them in the long run.

Set four was closely played by Midwestern State until a five-point run carried ASU to the 25-16 match completion. Amy DeWalt notched 17 digs for MSU and threw in seven helpers. Chloe Patton dug up 16 passes and made four assists.

In the final set, the Mustangs launched nine kills with five attack errors and three ball handling errors while the Belles smashed 11 kills and recorded an ace.

Midwestern State returns to D.L. Ligon Coliseum for another Lone Star Conference match on Saturday, Sept. 25. The Mustangs take on Lubbock Christian in their second conference match of the season.
