WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State's
Fernando Piedra garnered Lone Star Conference Special Teams Player of the Week as released by league officials Monday morning.
The sophomore punter from Jacksboro, Texas provided the special teams' edge in the 20th-ranked Mustangs' 35-17 win at No. 17 Angelo State Saturday night at LeGrand Stadium.
Piedra averaged 43.5 yards on eight punts placing four inside the 20-yard line including a career-best 70-yard punt downed at the 1.
The LSC punting leader upped his season average to 39.7 yards per attempt. He also leads the league placing eight punts inside the 20-yard line.
Piedra also proved effective on kickoffs with five of his six efforts resulting in touchbacks. The other was muffed out of bounds giving the Rams starting field position at their own 2-yard line.
MSU takes on Eastern New Mexico in its home opener Saturday night at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
