AVLA, Okla. -- Midwestern State starts the 2021 season 1-0 after they dropped Northwestern Oklahoma State on the road by 3-0.
Cassidy Savoy notched two goals in the first half and
Lexi Beck tallied her first collegiate goal on a second half penalty kick. With the win under their belt, the team looks to Saturday's game to go 2-0 on the season.
Beck was on it right from the starting whistle where she had a shot blocked and another saved by Reagan Allen in the first minute of play. She forced another save only three minutes later while
Kelly Cannistra and
Senna Garcia added their own tries.
Taylor Camp does what she does best in the 15th minute with a save against Callie Haneborg. The situation repeated in the 18th minute of the first half. Play continued with the Rangers gaining some momentum and putting in two shots on goal back-to-back.
Once
Cassidy Savoy entered the game for MSU, the tide started rolling. The sophomore forward gained her first collegiate goal on a high shot to the center of the goal past Allen in the 32nd minute. Her second goal found the net in the 36th minute with a low strike to put the Mustangs up by two.
Camp made one more save to keep the lead before the halftime whistle. The senior keeper ended the first half with five saves while the team registered eight shots with four on target. Allen collected two stops for Northwestern Oklahoma State and the team had eight shots with five on goal.
Isabella Cruz started the second half strong with a shot that barely missed high. On the other end, Clare Merrigan, the Ranger's only returning goal scorer from the previous year, tried to put one past Camp but failed.
Senior forward
Valentina Carvajal tallied her first strike of the night to force a save from Allen.
Jewel Lewis tried her hand in the 59th minute as well.
The two teams were back in forth throughout the half until Beck put away a penalty kick for the Mustangs. From there, the visitors rode out play until the game was up. Beck totaled five shots with four landing on goal while Cannistra, Carvajal and
Emilia Nunez each had two. Heneborg led the Rangers with four shots. Camp ended the day with seven saves to her name while Allen left with five.
