CLAREMORE, Okla. -- Midwestern State started the year off with a bang after defeating Missouri S&T 3-0 in a Thursday afternoon neutral site match.
Trevor Amann recorded his first brace of the year and
Carlos Flores sealed the deal in the second half to send the Miners packing. The Mustangs move to 1-0 on the 2021 season with another match on Saturday.
MSU proved their No. 22 ranking right from the whistle.
Mere Escobar ripped a shot to start out the match within the first two minutes. The eighth minute was full of activity with
Toi Yamaoka and
James Doyle each hitting one at Mchael Sallee, goalkeeper for S&T.
The number 13 is usually unlucky but the 13th minute was grand for Amann as he made his first strike. With the assist from Yamaoka, the senior put the Mustangs ahead. Amann was not finished as he recorded the next two shots for the squad.
Before the Miners could register one shot, Midwestern State was up by two in the first 20 minutes. Amann's second goal was assisted by senior transfer Doyle.
Marc-Antoine Huzen, who started between the posts for MSU, finally saw his time to shine in a save off Nicholas Sikora's kick. His next and last save came late in the game from Andreou Afxentis' try on goal.
The Mustangs finished off the half with another shot by Escobar and
Carlos Vargas trying his hand off the third corner kick. S&T notched just one shot versus MSU's ten and Huzen had the only save of the half.
The second half took similar shape to the first with Midwestern State taking the upper hand. Within the first five minutes, Flores,
Brandon Martinez-Trelles and
Ryan Lambe had their first shots of the competition, along with two corners. Vargas' third shot of the game forced Michael into his third save of the afternoon.
Flores took the next jab at the goal for the Missouri S&T keeper to gain another save for the Miners. Fortunately for MSU, Flores' third attemp found the back of the net with
Grayson Ellett with the assist.
The 83rd minute was filled with another save by Michael from Vargas' last shot and Huzen making his second save of the game. Soon after,
Julian Barajas knicked a rocket off the left post to deny a fourth goal for the Mustangs. From there, the team rode out the game until the final whistle.
MSU held S&T to four shots with only two on target while gaining 19 total shots themselves. The squad also ousted the Miners on corners with eight versus the opposition's two.
Midwestern State looks to ride the winning vibes into Saturday when they take on another Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent. The team will face Rockhurst University in Claremore, Okla. with the same 1 p.m. start time. Live stats will be available online.
