CLAREMORE, Okla. -- Midwestern State starts the season with two wins in three days as they move past Rockhurst University by a 2-1 score.
Trevor Amann continues his reign of terror by notching the first goal and assisting the second for the Mustangs.
"Our play, passing and movement was fine," said Head Coach
Michael Meachum. "We created a lot of chances but we need to be better in front of goal."
The senior's strike came early in the game when he found a breakaway going one on one with Rockhurst's keeper, Fabio D'Errico. Amann found away around the last man and with no other choice, D'Errico fouled the forward in the box to lead to a penalty kick in the 12th minute.
Amann put away the chance with a calm slice to give the Mustangs the lead. In total, he had five shots on the game.
Fortune struck for MSU again in the 25th minute after combination play on the right wing pushed the ball RU's box. D'Errico saved the first shot and the rebound landed to Amann who swiveled and passed across the goal to a wide open
Mere Escobar.
This counted for Escobar's first goal of the season and fourth career notch.
The Mustangs recorded ten shots, including a missed PK in the 42nd minute, in the first half. The defense kept the Hawks at bay with zero shots.
Marc-Antoine Huzen had a quiet half whereas D'Errico made two saves for his squad.
"The opposition played pretty direct and we were able to handle it well," said Meachum.
The second half opened up a bit for both teams as
Brandon Martinez-Trelles tallied two of his three shots.
Huzen made a big save in the 53rd minute to deny Jordan Andrews a tally for the Hawks.
Unfortunately, RUÂ was able to slip one past Huzen late in the game. Tomasso Tirabassi found his first goal of the season in the 73rd minute to give a glimmer of hope to Rockhurst.
Huzen was able to deny Tirabassi on his second attempt in the 77th minute and Midwestern State was able to ride out the rest of the match.
The Hawks recorded four shots in the second period while MSU tallied 8. Huzen collected three saves and D'Errico put up two to total four for the game.
"It is just super important for us to create chances, but we need to be braver and take pride in front of goal," explained Meachum. "Or else we might have some battles on our hands later on."
The Mustangs can showcase their finishes at home as their next match is at Stang Park against No. 19 Northeastern State. The Thursday night showdown kicks off at 7 p.m. in Wichita Falls, Texas.
