Mustangs roll past Simon Fraser, win streak goes to six

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- No. 18 Midwestern State concludes the MSU Classic with a 3-0 victory over No. 19 Simon Fraser on Saturday night. The Mustangs have a perfect 6-0 record for the 2021 season after Toi Yamaoka, Mere Escobar and Julian Barajas each notched goals in the match.

MSU started the match strong with Yamaoka's first goal of the season in the ninth minute of play. Carlos Flores passed to the open midfielder from the Mustang's corner kick. Yamaoka took a touch and rocked the ball into the left side of the net from beyond the 18 yard box. The goal counted for the senior's fourth point on the season while Flores collected his four helper.

For the rest of the half, both teams practiced tough defense. MSU recorded six shots in the first half and SFU made three. Marc-Antoine Huzen and Aiden Bain each registered a save for their team.

The second half was a physical battle between Midwestern State and Simon Fraser as the visitors searched for an equalizer. Luck was on the home side as Trevor Amann found his way between two defenders and was tripped in the box. A penalty kick was awarded to the Mustangs and Escobar stepped up to the spot. The sophomore inked his second penalty on the season, going 2-2.

Barajas finished the match with his first goal of the season and fourth point. Flores put in a cross to the far side of SFU's goal and it connected with Rory Doyle's head. Bain made a diving save to deny the sophomore but Barajas pounced on the rebound for the third and final goal of the match.

Amann led the charge with five shots and landed one on goal. Escobar put all three of his attempts on target and Yamaoka notched two. Connor Glennon led Simon Fraser with two shots and one on target. Carlos Vargas, Grayson Ellett and James Doyle recorded 90 minute performances form the defense and midfield.

Huzen made one save for the Mustangs and collected his sixth win and fourth shutout on the season. Bain made five saves for SFU.

Midwestern State now moves on to Lone Star Conference play. The Mustangs face West Texas A&M in a rematch of the 2020 LSC Tournament final. The match kicks off at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 22, in Stang Park.
