WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- It was a tough night at Stang Park on Wednesday night as No. 10 Midwestern State lost their six match win streak after falling to No. 5 West Texas A&M, 4-3.
James Doyle scored the opening tally and
Toi Yamaoka caught the last two scores but the Mustangs could not find the equalizer as they fall to 6-1 on the season.
MSU started strong with Doyle notching his third goal of the year in the fourth minute.
Mere Escobar earned his first assist of the season while
Carlos Flores' corner kick helper was number five for the senior.
Stefan Andjelic landed his third goal at 13:59 to put the Buffs level with the Mustangs. Rotem Weiss tallied another in the 20th minute to take the lead while Giancarlo Saldana put the visitors ahead by two going into half.
WT out-shot MSU 9-4 in the first half and Tim Miles completed one save.
Marc-Antoine Huzen stood on his head four times in his seventh start of the season.
Midwestern State had a tough second half ahead and it become even tougher after West Texas A&M secured their fourth goal of the night. Anthony Perea found the back of the net with 28 minutes to play. This marked the first time that Huzen had four put past him in his career at Midwestern State.
The Mustangs made their way back into the game with Yamaoka's second goal of the season at 71:25. Things looked hopeful again when the referee pointed to the spot after a WT foul inside their own 18. Unfortunately, Miles made the save on Yamaoka's penalty kick attempt and the score stayed 4-2 in favor of the Buffs.
Trevor Amann had two close attempts in the 84th and 88th minute for MSU but could not avail. The senior led the home side with five shots and registered three on goal.
Yamaoka netted the final goal of the night in at 87:03, leaving only a slight amount of time for Midwestern State to secure the equalizing goal. After 15 total shot attempts and eight landing on frame, the final whistle blew with WT holding the 4-3 victory. The Buffs concluded with 11 shots and five saves.
Midwestern State returns to Stang Park on Wednesday, Sept. 29, to take on another Lone Star Conference foe in Lubbock Christian. Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
