WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Carlos Flores' opening goal and assist to
Grayson Ellett's first Mustang tally took Midwestern State up over Westminster (Utah) in the first half. Add in
Mere Escobar's penalty kick conversion and the Mustangs had the trifecta in their defeat over the Griffins in Thursday night's showdown at Stang Park.
Flores notched his fifth goal of the season in the 16th minute on a cross put in by
Julian Barajas on the right corner of the 18 yard box. Flores settled the ball with one touch and pushed it past Noah Larkin for the second. The senior has 20 goals in his 79-match career at MSU.
Later in the half, Flores collected his third straight assist of the year with the other two coming against Northeastern State (9/9) and Rogers State (9/11). The midfielder placed the ball for Midwestern State's third corner of the half. Ellett was wide open, streaking down the middle of the box and a firm header directed the ball into the back of the net.
The Wichita Falls native earned his first goal of the year and third points after securing an assist against Missouri S&T (9/2). Ellett recorded two shots on the night with one landing on target.
The Mustangs concluded the half with eight shots and three corners while the Griffins recorded seven shots and one corner.
Marc-Antoine Huzen made three saves and Larkin registered three as well.
The second half was much more aggressive between the two teams as Westminster searched for a goal and Midwestern State forged ahead. In the 75th minute,
Trevor Amann turned between two Griffin defenders and was face to face with the opposition's goal. The senior beat one tackle and was one on one with Larkin before a Westminster player knocked him off the ball in the box.Â
A penalty kick was awarded to the home side and
Mere Escobar stepped up to the spot. The sophomore buried the ball in the lower left corner of the net to seal the deal for MSU.
Amann led both teams with five shots and landed four on goal while Carlos Becerra-Gomez and Armin Hasanovic each tallied two shots with one on target. For the second half, the Mustangs put up six shots and held the Griffins to one. Huzen did not have to make any saves and Larkin tallied three.
Midwestern State returns to play in the second day of the MSU Classic on Saturday, Sept. 18. The Mustangs take on No. 19 Simon Fraser in their final match of the weekend. Kick-off is set for 5 p.m. at Stang Park.
