WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Trevor Amann posted his second brace of the year against No. 9 Rogers State (3-1). Max Gonzalez and
James Doyle each contributed a goal to put Midwestern State up 4-0 over the Hillcats at Stang Park on Saturday night.
Amann's opening tally connected in the tenth minute after
Colby Parton found himself in the corner of RSU's defensive half. The junior whipped the ball into the middle of the six yard box to find Amann's head. The forward redirected the pass into the bottom left corner of the net to put the home side up by one.
Amann recorded his sixth goal of the year to total 15 points with 18 shots.
The Mustangs didn't find the back of the net again until the 40th minute when Max Gonzalez secured himself as a super sub as he notched his third goal in three games.
Rory Doyle won an aerial ball near the middle of the field and it found
Julian Barajas, who completed the give-and-go with Doyle. A slip pass by the midfielder found Gonzalez outside of the six yard box who cut it back across goal for the second tally of the night.
The two teams glided through the rest of the half without much excitement. MSU carried 13 shots in the first half while RSU only had five.
Carlos Vargas notched both of his shots in the first period and
Mere Escobar put two on target.
Marc-Antoine Huzen made one save for the Mustangs and Declan Viljoen made three.
The second half was a back and forth battle for both teams though Midwestern State was able to breakthrough in the 65th minute.
James Doyle scored his second goal of the season and in back-to-back games. From a corner kick,
Carlos Flores dumped the ball into the box and after Vilijoen punched the ball out, Doyle was able to head it right past him and into the net.
Amann struck again three minutes later after the Mustangs completed nine consecutive passes from box to box. Flores slid the ball to Amann who alluded his defender and found goal number four.
In an effort to cut the deficit, Rogers State notched five shots in the remaining 22 minutes of play. MSU resumed a defensive shape to maintain their lead and collected their fourth straight win at the final whistle.
Huzen made two stops in the second half to gain his second shutout of the season. RSU outshot the Mustangs seven to three in the second period though the home side registered 16 overall shots with seven landing on target. The visitors put up 12 attempts and notched three on goal.
Midwestern State will host the MSU Classic on Sept. 16 and 18 at Stang Park. The team kicks off the Classic against Westminster on the 16th at 7:30 p.m. and takes on Simon Fraser on the 18th at 5 p.m.
