WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State's
Melik Owens was named to Dave Campbell's Texas Football's 2021 Preseason All-Texas Small College Team released Tuesday afternoon.
The senior defensive end from Houston earned All-Lone Star Conference honorable mention following his sophomore campaign in 2019. He finished fourth on the squad with 49 tackles, but made a team-high 13.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks and six quarterback hurries.
Owens made a splash in the Mustangs' season opening win over FCS Northwestern State earning LSC Defensive Player of the Week honors. He helped MSU claim a 33-7 victory finishing with seven tackles including 2.5 for loss with 1.5 quarterback sacks.
Owens followed the performance with nine-tackle effort with 2.5 sacks in a win at Lindenwood (Mo.) before suffering an injury against Angelo State.
He competed in three games for the Mustangs in the spring highlighted by a 3.5-sack performance in the finale against UT Permian Basin.
Owens has amassed 77 tackles with 22.5 tackles for loss and 11 sacks in 18 career games with the Stang Gang.
Midwestern State opens the 2021 slate on Sept. 4 at Quincy (Ill.).
