WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Randi Heaton's volley in the 55th minute from 20 yards out lifted Midwestern State to a 2-1 win over UT Tyler in the Lone Star Conference quarterfinals Saturday afternoon at Stang Park.
The Mustangs (2-6-1) advance to a quarterfinal round matchup with top-ranked Dallas Baptist Tuesday at the Patriot Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
Midwestern State claimed its first LSC postseason win since claiming the tournament title in 2016.
The Patriots began the game charging at the Mustangs. They racked up four shots in the first 15 minutes before
Julia Orozco notched one for the home side. Senior
Avery Lewis was booked early for a hard foul on UTT's defender.
After the back-and-forth play, Cannistra's throw in found Lewis deep in UT Tyler's box and almost to the end line. Lewis turned but was not able to bypass her defender and the visitors kicked the ball to try to clear. It fell only as far as Cannistra, who stood perched between the sideline and the edge of the 18-yard box. The midfielder took a few touches and let the ball soar over Camri Cecil and into the top corner. This counted for Canistra's first goal of the season and tenth in her career.
The celebration did not last long as the Patriots responded quickly with a tally of their own. A corner kick gave the visitors the perfect chance to even the score at 26:14. A header by Landri Edwards deflected off a MSU player on the goal line and fell past
Taylor Camp.
Alexa Hernandez picked up the second yellow of the game in the 31st minute after fouling
Reece Wildt from behind.
For the rest of the half, MSU out-shot UTT six to two in the remaining 20 minutes. The final attempt of the half was a floater by Maddie Higgins that Camp pushed over the bar to keep the game even.
Total, the Mustangs grabbed nine shots with three falling on goal and one corner. Camp collected two saves between the posts. The Patriots had seven shots with two on goal and four corner kicks. Cecil put up three saves.
Tatum Sharp registered a card early in the second half for a push in the back.
Cannistra almost put another one away in the 55th minute with a hard shot towards the upper right side of the goal. Cecil stretched out enough to push the ball over the crossbar for a Mustang corner. After the kick, UT Tyler cleared the ball towards the top of the box. It bounced once and landed perfectly in front of Heaton who was running in from cleanup duty. The junior did not hesitate and pounded the ball back in the opposite direction with one touch. It sailed into the net for her first goal of the season and second in her career.
In hopes of finding the equalizer, the Patriots pushed on with seven more shots through the second half.
Valentina Carvajal and Sharylee Anaya recorded cautions in the final five minutes.
In the end, UT Tyler's seven shots could not find the back of the net and the two corners did not aid either. Cecil finished with five saves for the Patriots while Camp put in four for a .800 save percent, her second highest this year. The Mustangs put up 17 kickers for the game with seven forcing saves. Both teams finishes with six corners while UTT put five shots on goal from 14 total.
Cannistra and Orozco led the Mustangs with four shots each while Anaya put up three to guide the Patriots.
UT Tyler closes the season with a 2-7 mark.
