DALLAS, Texas – The Lone Star Conference postseason run comes to an end for Midwestern State as they are downed by Dallas Baptist in the quarterfinal match of the tournament. After entering half-time with a three-goal deficit,
Avery Lewis notched one in the second before DBU hit their final tally of the night.
The home side saw their first put back in the ninth minute of play. Following a goal kick, MSU were caught stuck in their defensive end thanks to the strong wind and the Patriots' pressure. Marit Auee was able to put a cross across the box, which Melissa Jones flashed into the left side of the net.
Taylor Camp rebounded with a save against Summerlyn Heller off the free kick opportunity at 13:29.
Alex Sandlin put up a try ten minutes later for the Mustangs first shot attempt. The junior defender's bid ended high.
After a few more battles between the two teams, Dallas Baptist capitalized on a corner kick. The team was able to hold the ball in the box and Auee finished the ricocheted ball from the back post. The score now sat at 2-0 with 12 minutes left to play.
The Patriots added another before the half-time whistle sounded. Solid passing allowed Ashley Merrill to squeeze the ball past Camp. Abigail Olmos and Delaney Schmidt had the assists for the third goal of the game.
Julia Orozco added MSU's second shot of the half. The Mustangs saw four saves and no corners in the first 45. DBU made 11 shots with Adrianna Schroeder making no saves. They also had five corners.
Lewis took the second half by storm, scoring only seven minutes in. The senior's second goal of the season was a hustle play after
Senna Garcia's shot. Hailey Brown, subbed in for Schroeder, saved the initial blow but the ball bounced out of her gloves. Lewis came streaking in and found the back of the net from the ground.
The visitor's rally did not last long as Dallas Baptist responded less than a minute later with their fourth goal of the game. A miskick by a Mustang defender allowed Olmos to find Merrill at the top of the box. Delaney Schmidt was wide open when the pass came to her and the back-post finish went in easy.
Camp made one more save before she exited the game. The net keeper made five saves in her 62 minutes of play.
Alexis Jackson made her first appearance on the season in the 64th minute.
Midwestern State offense contributed three more shots before the final whistle sounded. Orozco, Garcia, and Lewis could not get one past Brown. They finished the second half with five shots and one corner. Jackson made two saves in her 27 minutes.
Dallas Baptist made 11 shots, two saves and four corners in the last half of play. They will move on to the semifinals of the tournament.
