Mustangs drop two matches in Tyler

TYLER, Texas -- Midwestern State had a pair of goals in mind Saturday for a weekend trip to East Texas.

The Mustangs needed a morning win over upstart UT Tyler to keep hopes alive for a Lone Star Conference championship, then MSU hoped to give the top-ranked junior college team in the land a battle in the afternoon.

MSU (9-7) found the accomplishments a little much to handle as the Patriots completed a sweep of league play with a 5-2 win over the Mustangs, then Tyler Junior College rolled to a 7-0 victory in the afternoon.

The Mustangs dropped a hard-fought doubles point to UT Tyler as 17th-ranked Alex Martinez Roca and Alexandre Crepy fell 6-3 to No. 13 Jan Lucca Marquardt and Michael Apple at the top line.

Ben Westwick and Brice Bradshaw evened the count with a 6-3 victory over Leon Sell and Gonzalo Fernandez Gill at No. 2.

But the Patriots clinched the point by taking a tiebreaker at No. 3, then finished off the match by claiming victories in four of the six singles' matches.

Martinez Roca claimed his 98th career combined win by claiming a third victory over a nationally ranked opponent at No. 1 singles. The No. 8-ranked Martinez Roca took down 40th-ranked Egor Shestakov in split sets -- 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Jean Muniz provided MSU with its only other point with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Moritz Mayer at the No. 5 line.

Later in the day, Tyler JC claimed its 13th consecutive win with a sweep of the Mustangs.

The Apaches boast three nationally ranked singles players including No. 9 Jaycer Lyeons, No 27 Ryo Minakata and No. 50 Jeff Guerrero, while Lyeons and Minakata were members of nationally ranked doubles tandems last season.

Angel Palacios and Quentin Scharfenberg provided MSU with a highlight by claiming a 6-2 victory over Guerrero and Cash Hanzlik at No. 3 doubles.

Crepy was the lone Mustang to push his singles opponent into a third set before falling to 11-9 in a super tiebreak to Alan Magadan at No. 4 singles.

The Mustangs close the regular season Friday afternoon against St. Mary's at the MSU Tennis Center. First serve is set for noon.
