WICHITA FALLS, Texas – After twice delaying due to the rain and lightning, Midwestern State grabbed a monumental victory to out St. Mary's by a 4-3 score.
Jean Muniz clinched the down to the wire win for the Mustangs in his three set performance at the fifth singles line. In the last Lone Star Conference match of the regular season, MSU lands a 10-7 overall record and 5-2 for conference play.
The team's overtake started at doubles with
Ben Westwick and
Alex Martinez Roca – playing together for the first time this season – gaining the W at the first doubles spot. The new duo beat Jeremiah Sanchez and Saisaurav Konakanchi by 6-1.
Angel Palacios and
Alexandre Crepy also gained a new partner in each other at the second doubles line. The two were not able to overcome James Finnigan and Jake Faryniarz but battled to a 5-7 score.
Quentin Sharfenberg and
Brice Bradshaw clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 score at three doubles. The pair took out Nicolas Lllosa and Leon Hein in their 11th competition together this year. This gave Midwestern State the 1-0 advantage heading into singles play.
Westwick went 2-2 for the day by adding a third spot singles win to his belt. The sophomore make quick work of Llosa in a 6-1, 6-1 match. After the Mustangs went up by two, things started to get interesting.
The Rattlers gained their first notch at the fourth singles line when Finnigan closed out Crepy. The play ended with a 6-3, 6-2 score for Finnigan.
Palacios gained his 11th singles win of the season by outing Ryan Koth. The senior won each set 6-2 to put MSU ahead by two again.
No. 16 Sanchez followed up by upsetting No. 8 Martinez Roca at the top spot. They dueled to three sets with Sanchez grabbing the first, 6-3. Martinez Roca came back to win the super set tiebreak 8-6 for set two. In the end, the visitor had set three by 7-5. Down by one, St. Mary's needed to win the next singles battle for a chance to win.
Hein came through for the visitors has he and Scharfenberg played to three sets. Scharfenberg had set one in a 7-5 superset tiebreaker. Hein came back in the final two sets with 6-1 and 6-2 defeats. It was all down to the fifth line to determine the winner of the April 23 match.
The final competition was intense as Alex Gee and Muniz fought for the final point. Muniz climbed out of the first set on top by 6-2 while Gee had the second on a 7-4 superset tiebreaker. Muniz finished it off with a 6-1 victory in the final set to secure the 4-3 win for Midwestern State.
The Mustangs begin the road to defend their 2019 Lone Star Conference Championship starting on Thursday, April 29. The championship matches will be in Waco, Texas, and held at the Waco Regional Tennis and Fitness Center. The schedule is set to come out within the next week once all conference teams have completed their seasons.
