Hard battle for Mustangs in fall to DI Baylor in Tuesday's exhibition

WACO, Texas – Midwestern State contended in a tough battle facing a 23-5 Baylor University team in Tuesday's competition. The Bears clutched all seven points in MSU's exhibition match at Herd Tennis Center. This was the only Division I foe that the Mustangs faced during the 2021 season. The last time Midwestern State went up against a DI team was in 2019 when the team faced Abilene Christian on April 23 and SMU on Feb. 3.

Angel Palacios and Quentin Scharfenberg started the team off at the third doubles line, going up against Finn Bass and Alex Garcia. The Baylor duo overtook by a 6-0 score. The home side clutched the doubles point with a 6-1 defeat at the top spot. Alex Martinez Roca and Alexandre Crepy managed a point before Constantin Frantzen and Nick Stachowiak pulled ahead.

Brice Bradshaw and Ben Westwick, playing together for the first time this season, competed at number two doubles for Midwestern State. The pair took on Adrian Boitan and Ryan Dickerson in the last group to finish. In the end, the MSU two fell by a score of 0-6.

With a point in hand, Baylor stepped up to singles play while the Mustangs pushed to equalize.

Jean Muniz and Garcia battled at the fifth singles line to a 6-1, 6-1 score in favor of the Bears. Because it was an exhibition match, the junior still keeps his undefeated record for singles play this season.

Alberto Diaz made his seventh singles appearance for MSU, this time at the sixth spot. The Spaniard grabbed two points in each set against Sebastian Nothhaft, but was downed 2-6, 2-6 for BU's third point.

Westwick also put up a good fight against Frantzen at number three singles. Herd Tennis Center saw Frantzen overtake by 6-3, 6-2 for the home side's clutch of the match. The last three singles competitions continued.

Martinez Roca extended his run at the top singes spot for Midwestern State on Tuesday. The junior faced Sven Lah and fell 2-6, 3-6.

Palacios played against Ryan Dickerson at the second singles line. Dickerson won out by a 6-2, 6-1 score. Baylor collected six points with the win.

Crepy put up the best fight of the evening against Finn Bass at the four singles. The freshman pushed a 4-6, 4-6 score against his competitor for the closest score of the match. In the end, the Bears grabbed the final point and the victory.

MSU gets back to Lone Star Conference play on Saturday, April 17, with a match against UT Tyler at Summers Tennis Center. The battle kicks off at 10 a.m. The team then faces Tyler Junior College in a non-conference match starting at 3:30 p.m.
