Mustangs unable to hold off No. 12 Angelo State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – No. 12 Angelo State proved to be the tougher team Saturday afternoon at the MSU Tennis Center. That allowed the Rambelles to come away with a 4-3 win over No. 17-ranked Midwestern State to gain the upper hand in the race for the Lone Star Conference title.

The 'Belles battled to victories at the bottom two doubles' lines to claim a crucial point, then managed wins in two of the three singles' matches which were extended into a third and deciding set.

Midwestern State battled back to tie the match at 2-all after Kyndall Quiroz beat Zoe Gubbels (6-4, 6-1) at the No. 5 line and Anga Ghinga defeated Ena Ovcina (7-5, 6-1) at No. 2.

That's when the match turned intriguing.

MSU senior Tiffany Hollebeck gave the Mustangs their first lead of the match at 3-2 by outlasing No. 13-ranked Valentina Gonzalez (3-6, 6-4, 6-3) at No. 1 for the first of three split-set matches.

Pushed to the brink and needing wins on both remaining courts, Angelo State was up to the challenge.

Maria Delgadillo leveled the match at 3-all by claiming a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 win over Emilija Visic at No. 4 before Dianela Rodriguez clinched the match for ASU by outlasting Casie Curry 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 3.

The No. 14-ranked duo Hollebeck and Curry claimed a big 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles in a showdown with the No. 13-ranked pair of Gonzales and Ovcina.

Midwestern State returns to action with two road matches Saturday in Tyler. The Mustangs face LSC foe UT Tyler at 10 a.m. before battling top-ranked Tyler Junior College at 3:30 p.m.
