No. 17 Midwestern State beats UT Tyler, falls to top-ranked Tyler JC

TYLER, Texas -- No. 17 Midwestern State rode its doubles' edge to a narrow 4-3 win over UT Tyler Saturday morning at Summer Tennis Center before falling to top-ranked Tyler Junior College in the afternoon.
 
The Mustangs (11-7) close the regular season Friday afternoon against St. Mary's (Texas) at the MSU Tennis Center. First serve is set for noon. MSU can clinch the No. 2 seed in the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament with a win over the Rattlers.
 
Tiffany Hollebeck and Casie Curry provided momentum for the Mustangs against UT Tyler as the No. 14-ranked duo rolled to a 6-0 win at the No. 1 doubles' line over Leony Deutschmann and Akshaya Suresh.
 
Ethne Dowling and Kyndall Quiroz combined for a 6-4 victory over Anna Claire Gerletti and Gani Ibrasheva at No. 3 to clinch the doubles' point.
 
That was all MSU needed as the Mustangs played without freshman Anda Ghinga, who typically pairs with Emilija Visic at No. 2 doubles and also competes at the second line in singles.
 
Midwestern State battled for a for a split in singles play to earn the victory as Hollebeck defeated Tanvikhaa Saravanan -- 6-4, 6-2 -- at No. 1; Curry rolled Ibrasheva -- 6-2, 6-2 -- at No. 2 and Dowling beat Chloe Chawner -- 6-2, 7-6 -- in straight sets at the No. 5 line.
 
The Mustangs snapped a four-match winning streak for UT Tyler which fell to 11-4 and 4-2 in league play.
 
In the afternoon, Hollebeck and Curry once again provided the spark for MSU.
 
The duo claimed their fifth consecutive victory and won for the 14th time in the last 15 matches surviving a 7-6 tiebreaker over Tyler JC's top team of Lauren Azalotta and Alexia Tashbaeva.
 
Hollebeck, the 34th ranked player in NCAA Division II, pushed Destinee Martins into a third set at No. 1 singles before falling 10-6 in a super breaker.
 
Freshman Skylar Minns also forced a deciding set against Tashbaeva at the No. 6 line before falling 6-1, 1-6, 2-6.
 
Tyler JC improved to 14-1 with a 7-0 sweep of the Mustangs.
