WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State ended their three day match blast with a 6-1 win over Metropolitan State-Denver on Sunday afternoon. The team keeps their home win streak over the Roadrunners, now at 5-0. No. 16 MSU moves to .500 for the season with a 4-4 record.
The Mustangs started strong by grabbing the doubles point. It began at number two doubles with
Emilija Visic and
Anda Ghinga beating Helena Steenberg and Lilly Steinmeier 6-3. Then
Ethne Dowling and
Emily Ineson overcame Marie Cool and Gala Castello, 6-4 at number three.
The final nail in the coffin was a 7-5 win by
Tiffany Hollebeck and
Casie Curry at number one doubles. They beat Brooklyn Ross and Isabel Heras. MSU took the 1-0 lead and headed into singles play.
Ghinga furthered the lead at number two singles. She beat Steenberg 6-3, 6-0. Number four singles found at point for MSD as Castello overcame Visic 6-2, 6-4.
No. 43 Curry dominated at number three singles over Heras with a score of 6-3, 7-5. This put Midwestern State ahead 3-1 as they searched for the victory.
Hollebeck found another win at number one singles in three sets. She grabbed the first set 6-3, but Ross took the second 6-3. Hollebeck rounded out in the third set 6-2, to give MSU their fourth team point.
Number five singles was the next to finish. Dowling took the first set 6-1 while Steinmeier won the second 6-4. Dowling took home the point after winning the third set 10-4 in the super tiebreak.
Skylar Minns took the sixth and last point home for the team in her 6-4, 6-1 win at number six singles over Cool.
The team travels to Arlington, Texas for their first Lone Star Conference match. They will take on Dallas Baptist on Friday, March 19, at the Arlington Tennis Center. First serve is set for 11 am.
