WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State grabbed their third win of the weekend with a narrow 4-3 win over Southern Arkansas on Saturday night.
Skylar Minns brought home the gold for the Mustangs with her singles win. The women's team now sits at 2-3 for the season thus far.
MSU started the match strong by winning the doubles point.
Anda Ghinga and
Emilija Visic beat Sarah Roy and Kalley Smith at number two doubles, 6-1.
Tiffany Hollebeck and
Casie Curry finished the point by gaining the win over Angela Vargas and Lena Milosevic. The 6-4 score gave Midwestern State the one point lead.
Ethne Dowling and
Emily Ineson were ahead at number three doubles against Serena Gill and Honoka Yoshimura when the point was clinched.
No. 43 Curry kept the score coming with a win at number three singles. She won over Gill 6-3, 6-4. The visitors grabbed a point after a victory at number four singles. Roy went up 7-5, 6-4 over Visic.
Now down 1-2, SAU put another point on the board. Vargas beat Hollebeck in three sets at number one singles (3-6, 6-4, 6-4).
Now tied, the Mustangs kicked it into gear, starting with number two singles. Ghinga beat Milosevic in three sets going 6-1, 6-7, 7-5. Southern Arkansas kicked back with a win at number five singles. Yoshimura won over Dowling 7-6, 6-2.
It all came down to the number six singles battle.
Skylar Minns grabbed the first set 6-0 over Smith. Smith had the second 6-4. Minns sealed the deal with a 6-1 win in the third and final set to get the fourth point for the home team.
Midwestern State finishes the weekend series with a match against Metropolitan State-Denver on Sunday, March 7. MSU Tennis Center will host with the first serve at 3 p.m.
