CANYON, Texas – Valentina Carvajal scored the lone goal for Midwestern State in the 1-4 loss to West Texas A&M on Saturday night. The Mustangs fall to 0-3 for the season and 0-2 in conference play in 2021.

The team started strong with two shots by Alyssa Salinas and one shot by Carvajal. Taylor Camp also registered a save in the sixth minute of the game.

West Texas put their first goal in at 20:43. Hannah Kelley-Lusk put one in off a Calista Cordero helper. This is Kelley-Lusk's third goal of the season and Cordero's second assist.

After Carvajal struck again with a shot, forcing WT keeper, Reagan Heelan, to make the save. Marissa Resendez added another five minutes later.

MSU ended the half with six shots and three saves. The Lady Buffs put up 10 shots, two saves, and five corner kicks.

West Texas started the second half strong, scoring the second goal only seven minutes in. Cordero registered her first goal of the season, unassisted.

The Mustangs kept WT at bay as a few of the home side's shots bounced off the framework. Tatum Sharp put a shot into the bottom center that was saved by Heelan.

The Lady Buffs stuck again in the 67th minute when Reagan Matacale found Asha James for the third goal of the night. James got her first goal of the season and Matacale has her first assist.

Nicole Marsolek tried to put one into the bottom right corner that found another save by the keeper. A shot fell through when Kelly Cannistra found Valentina Carvajal in the 79th minute for her first career goal. This was Cannistra's second assist this year.

It was a short celebration as Kelley-Lusk put another one past Camp to seal the deal.

Camp finished the game with nine saves in 90 minutes. Heelan had five saves in 90 minutes.

MSU recorded 12 shots with six on goal and two corners in the match. West Texas managed 27 shots with 13 on goal. They also had five corners.

Midwestern State will travel to Tyler, Texas, next for their third Lone Star Conference match this season. The Wednesday, March 10, game will kick off at 6 p.m. at Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex.
