TYLER, Texas -- Midwestern State received just the spin it needed at Citizens First Bank Field.
Senior striker
Valentina Carvajal bent in a corner kick on the Mustangs' lone shot on goal Wednesday night to land MSU's first result of the season in a 1-0 win over UT Tyler.
"We needed this one pretty bad," MSU coach
Ryan Spence Said. "We got a good build up and earned a corner. The wind was really blowing toward our goal and it helped."
Midwestern State, which improved to 1-3, faces winless Oklahoma Christian in a home-and-home series next week. The teams battle in Oklahoma City on Wednesday at 5 p.m. before finishing the week at Stang Park Saturday at 3.
"Those are matches we need to get a result from to continue to build momentum," Spence said.
Midwestern State managed just one shot in the first half before three in the second half eventually producing Carvahal's second goal of the season in the 58th minute.
"They allowed us to possess the ball in front of their backs," Spence said. "We did a lot better once we figured out what they allowed us to do."
Spence lauded the play of freshman center backs
Emily Waters and
Reece Wildt, who keyed a defensive effort that limited the UT Tyler to nine total shots.
MSU junior goalkeeper
Taylor Camp made three saves to secure her first clean sheet of the season.
UT Tyler dipped to 1-4 on the season.
