MSU women's tennis grabs two home wins

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Number 16 Midwestern State grabbed their first two wins of the season on March 5, at MSU Tennis Center. They beat Southeastern Oklahoma 4-0 and Oklahoma Baptist 7-0 to go 2-4 for 2021.

Against Southeastern Oklahoma, the team grabbed the first four points to clinch the match. The team had the doubles point from a 6-1 win for Tiffany Hollebeck and Casie Curry over Zulay Castaneda and Vanessa Cozamanis.

Number two doubles saw Emilija Visic and Anda Ghinga defeat Vanessa Nitu and Elizaveta Tregubova 6-0.

Number three doubles did not go as well as the other two. Ethne Dowling and Skylar Minns fell 1-6 to Georgia Hosking and India Shiaelis.

The team won the first three singles to officially out beat Southeastern Oklahoma. Hollebeck defeated Castaneda 6-1, 6-3. Ghinga pulled out the win over Nitu 7-5, 6-3 at number two singles.

Number three singles saw no. 43 Curry outlast Tregubova 6,-3, 6-4.

The rest of the singles matches went unfinished. Visic was in the midst of the third set when it was cut. Dowling was just starting the first set at number five against Cozamanis. Finally, Lily Detherage did not begin her match with Shialeis.

The team swept all matches against Oklahoma Baptist to gain the 7-0 win. Starting at number one doubles, Hollebeck and Curry defeated Vera Gak Anagrova and Jenna Noel, 6-1. Number two doubles saw Ghinga and Visic grab the 6-3 win over Lin Xin Tan and Gabrielly Lamas. Last but not least, Dowling and Emily Ineson beat Elyce Clark and Rylie Helm 6-2.

The order of finish for doubles was one, three, and then two.

On the singles side, Ghinga was at number one against Tan. The former won 6-1, 6-4. Number two singles was a close match between no. 43 Curry and Noel. Curry took the first set 6-4 and Noel took the second 7-5. Curry won 10-5 in the super tiebreak.

Visic and Anagrova competed at number three singles. Visic came out on top with a 6-1, 6-0 score. Dowling defeated Lamas 6-3, 6-3 at number four singles.

Detherage won 6-3, 6-3 against Helm at number five singles. Minns was the last to claim her point for the team with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Clark.

The order of finish for singles was: 3, 4, 1, 2, 5, 6.

The team takes on Southern Arkansas on Saturday, March 6 at 3 p.m. The match will take place in Wichita Falls at the MSU Tennis Center.
