Mustangs fall to UCO by four in home rematch

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – For the second time this season, No. 17 Midwestern State fell to No. 5 Central Oklahoma, this time by a score of 4-0. The team pushed to revenge their earlier loss in Edmond, Oklahoma with the help of a home court advantage. In the clinch to win match, MSU could not garner a point before the visitors gained the majority.

On the doubles side, Anda Ghinga and Emilija Visic were the first to fall. The pair lost 1-6 at the second doubles spot to Mae Canete and Paola Landin. Abel-Byanu Abidullina and Isabella Dunlap completed the double's point for UCO with a 6-3 win over Tiffany Hollebeck and Casie Curry at the top spot. Ethne Dowling and Kyndall Quiroz's match against Blythe Buntrock and Nikki Boyar went unfinished.

Down by one, MSU started singles play with hopes of catching up to Central Oklahoma. Skylar Minns took the first loss with a 1-6, 2-6 fall to Boyar at six singles. This was ended Minn's five-match win streak.

Ghinga followed up with a drop to Canete. The number two singles match went 6-2, 6-1 in favor of the visitors. The Broncos stood ahead by three and needed just one point to grab the win.

The point came after No. 26 Abidullina defeated Hollebeck at the first singles spot. The 6-4, 6-2 score finished the match between the two teams.

Number three singles with No. 43 Curry and No. 29 Dunlap went unfished during set two. Dunlap had won the first set 7-5.

Visic's four singles battle with Landin was also halted by the win. Landin had the first set 6-2 and the two were even at four in the second.

Finally, Quiroz and Buntrock could not finish their match. Quiroz took the first set 6-4 and the second was tied at four for the five singles players.

The team will continue Lone Star Conference play on Thursday, April 1 and Saturday, April 3. The first match is against UT Permian Basin at 2 p.m. The second starts at 9 a.m. against Western New Mexico. Both will take place at the MSU Tennis Center for Midwestern State's first hosting gig for conference play.
