WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State snapped a 12-game slide with a 4-3 win over Cameron Sunday afternoon at Mustangs Park, then settled for a doubleheader split with the Aggies ralying for 3-0 win in Game 2.
MSU owns a 12-16 overall record and is now 5-11 in Lone Star Conference play. The Mustangs step outside of league play with a twin bill at Southeastern Oklahoma State Tuesday in Durant. First pitches are slated for 2 and 4 p.m.
Jacey Henry started with a bang on the mound for MSU in game one. The junior gained four of her eight total strikeouts in the first two innings and held the Aggies without a score. Her eight Ks are a career-high for the Marietta, Okla. native in her two years as a Mustang.
Carson Solis gained the first hit of the game with a single up the middle in the bottom of the second. She put up two hits and one run against Cameron.
CU tallied two runs in the third inning from a Haley Castle homer and Brenna Busby steal at home.
However, Midwestern State could not be discouraged and put in two of their own.
Ashley Turner's triple to center field pushed
Daylan Inkman in for the Mustangs first run of the day. This was Turner's only triple this year and second for her career. Turner then scored on a sacrifice fly by Henry to even the score.
Cameron replied with another run from Madyson Marvulli's home run to center field in the top of the fourth.
Marley Eller wanted some of that and added her own home run off the scoreboard that led Solis home. MSU led 4-3 with three more innings to play.
Henry registered her fifth double of the season for Midwestern State's last hit of the game. The final play of the game was a crazy diving catch by Solis to draw a close.
From the mound, Henry totaled 27 batters faced with three runs on six hits and no walks. She records her fifth win of 2021. The Aggies' Breley Webb faced 27 batters with four runs on five hits, four walks, and five strikeouts.
Game two was underway with
Kaitlyn Turner making her 13th start for the Mustangs as pitcher. Bethany Hines took the start for Cameron. Neither allowed a run until the top of the third when Khmari Edward's single to left center put one on the board. The Aggies totaled five hits and only one run in the third.
Mattye Tyler got her first hit of the day with a single to second base after
Bailey Brenek singled down the right field line. The only other hit for the Mustangs came from Henry's double to left center in the bottom of the sixth.
On the other side of the plate,
Addi Hanna started her pitching run in the top of the sixth. Turner faced 25 batters with one run on eight hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.
CU found their final two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Busby scored on a Midwestern State double play and Callie Christensen put the final nail in with a solo homer to center. MSU was unable to rally in the last inning and fell by three.
Hanna finished the game with two runs on three hits and one strikeout. Hines faced 24 batters with no runs on three hits and seven strikeouts. Turner collected the loss, going 4-7 for the year.
