Martinez Roca claims big singles win, but MSU falls at Cameron

LAWTON, Okla. – No. 19-ranked Midwestern State dropped its first Lone Star Conference match of the season on Friday afternoon at Streich-Henry Tennis Complex falling to Cameron, 6-1.

Doubles started fairly well with Quentin Scharfenberg and Angel Palacios pulling the 6-2 win. Iliya Tarranin and Carlos Vidal took the loss at the third doubles spot.

The Aggies took over from there. Alex Martinez Roca and Alexandre Crepy fell in their first doubles set in seven matches. The two were overtook by Bruno Vietri and Oscar del Grando, 6-3 at the first spot. Maycon Dias and Joao Duleba clinched the doubles point with their 7-5 victory over Ben Westwick and Alberto Diaz at number two doubles.

Down by one, the Mustangs needed to grab some singles wins to stay in the game.

No. 43 Martinez Roca put MSU on the score sheet with a 6-2, 7-5 win over No. 28 Vietri. This is the second time this season that the junior defeated a ranked opponent at the first singles spot.

Westwick fell to del Grando at the second singles by a score of 3-6, 0-6. This put Cameron up by one.

Dias barely beat No. 5 Palacios at number three singles. Dias took the first set 6-4 and got the second by a 7-4 super tiebreaker. This gave CU a two point advantage over Midwestern State.

They kept the ball rolling with a win at four singles. Crepy lost his seven match winning streak against Alvaro Chavez. Crepy had the first set 6-2, and Chavez took the second 6-1 and the third 6-4. The overall score stood at 4-1 with only two more chances for the Mustangs to catch up.

Another superset tiebreaker determined the number five singles. Duleba beat out Diaz 6-3 and 7-5 in the tiebreak. Vidal finished the final point with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Brice Bradshaw at number six singles.

The Mustangs will rebound with another match on Saturday, March 27. The LSC foe of Arkansas-Fort Smith will host the 10 a.m. match at the Fort Smith Athletic Club.
