MSU cool, calm, collected in first ever LSC postseason win

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Midwestern State Volleyball did something that they have never done before. The team won its first Lone Star Conference postseason game on Tuesday night against Dallas Baptist. Now at 10-6, the Mustangs took the first three sets (25-14, 25-12, 25-17) to move on to the LSC quarterfinals against No. 9 Angelo State.

As a whole, MSU put up the best hitting percent of any game this year going for 33 kills with only 12 errors and 83 total attacks for .253 percent. Lauryn Bourne led both teams with ten kills on the night. The freshman started the first set's 7-0 with a kill, while Jaycie Fuller ended the run with a service ace. From there, the Mustangs were easily able to take down the Patriots 25-14.

Bourne also added an ace in the second set to help push a 6-0 run.  She and Fuller each totaled nine digs for the three sets on the back line. On the net, Lissette Lefforge had a huge blocking night, totaling six block assists. This matches her season high set against Cameron on March 3. The senior also added five kills to the mix.

The team's nine blocks in three sets ties the most with three other matches from the year. The squad also limited their hitting errors, gaining only 12. This sets the smallest amount of errors made in one match for the year.

Alyssa Estrada-Hamby and Raven Presley combined for nine kills and six block assists. The two totaled 13 points throughout the night for the Mustangs.

Another 7-0 run in what would be the final set, propelled Midwestern State to the win. Taylor Anderson contributed one of her six kills in the roll. The junior measures a .333 hitting percent and adds a block assist.

Kaitlyn Masseth and Autumn Roach registered 12 and 16 assists, respectively. Masseth also had a serving ace during the first set.

DBU recorded a -0.75 hitting percent, the lowest MSU has held any opponent this year. The total attacks (93) and kills (22) are in the same boat. Midwestern State only allowed their foes 27 points for the match.

Midwestern State hopes to ride the momentum into the Wednesday, March 24, match against Angelo State. The LSC quarterfinal battle is set for 6 p.m. in San Angelo. The winner will move on to the semifinals, which takes place on Tuesday, March 30.
