SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Cinderella story ended on Wednesday night for Midwestern State as their Lone Star Conference post season run came to an end at the hands of Angelo State. MSU put up a fight, but fell to the number nine-ranked team in three straight sets (11-25, 20-25, 19-25).
"It was great to get our first post season win on Tuesday," Head Coach
Valerie Armstrong said. "We were picked to finish 12th and ended up in the top 8."
After pulling off the feat on Tuesday, the Mustangs had to take care of business against ASU. They started the night slow with only gaining ten points in the first set.
Lauryn Bourne put up two almost back-to-back kills for the team.
Lissette Lefforge added her own kill to keep MSU hanging close to ASU. The middle blocker added another hammer later on in the set.
Two 5-0 runs by the Rambelles pushed them ahead of Midwestern State. On the bright side,
Alyssa Estrada-Hamby recorded two block assists – one with Bourne and the other with
Raven Presley. Still attack errors for Midwestern State and hard hitting by Angelo State pulled the home side to the 25-11 win.
The second set proved a much closer test as the Mustangs reared to even the score. Bourne started the visiting team again with two hits and the outside hitter put up two more down farther in the set. She finished the night with seven kills and no errors.
Taylor Anderson grabbed her second kill of the night to bring the score to 6-9, with Midwestern State only trailing by three. A classic
Autumn Roach service ace put her team even with the competitors at 12 apiece. Unfortunately, a 7-0 run by the Rambelles, aided by two blocks, squashed the hopes of MSU.
The team fought back to get within three, but eventually fell 20-25 for a 0-2 score in the match. Midwestern State needed to clutch the third set for a chance at winning the game.
Presley began the third set with her third kill of the game and she would later add one more for four total rockets.
Jaycie Fuller followed up with a service ace. The senior led the Mustangs with nine digs for the night.
Roach added another ace to put MSU up by two over ASU. The setter recorded the most assists for her team with 11 and
Kaitlyn Masseth was close behind with ten.
Shortly after, Angelo State took seven straight points with no response from Midwestern State. An Anderson kill ended the streak. The junior right side hitter totaled eight kills, the most for the Mustangs.
Midwestern State rebounded a few points later with a five-point run of their own. This brought them back within two to keep the fight alive. Presley aided two of the five points with a block assist with Lefforge and a solo block. These totaled three blocks for the senior.
Though MSU battled back, in the end it was not enough as Angelo State took the final set 25-19 and will move on to the Lone Star Conference semifinals next week.
"I am proud of the way we played this season," Armstrong remarked. "I am thankful for the team and the seniors, Fuller and Presley, for their contributions to the program."
