DENTON, Texas – Midwestern State's exhibition match against Division I opponent, North Texas, ended in a 4-1 loss for the Mustangs on Tuesday night. The mid-week battle does not count towards the team's 5-4 record for the season and allows them to keep the five-game win streak alive.
MSU started the night strong by grabbing the doubles point from the Mean Green.
Tiffany Hollebeck and
Casie Curry finished 6-4 over Nidhi Surapaneni and Lucie Devier in the first doubles spot.
Emilija Visic and
Anda Ghinga dropped in the second spot to Saki Oyama and Kexuan Zhou, 4-6.
Kyndall Quiroz and
Ethne Dowling were able to secure the point with their 7-5 defeat of Sophia Hummel and Maria Ponomareva.
Once singles began, Midwestern State's luck ran out. Devier outed Hollebeck at number one singles with a 6-3, 6-3 score. This brought UNT even with MSU at one all.
Hummel continued the gain at six singles. She beat
Skylar Minns 6-4, 6-1 to gain the team's second point.
The final two points were won at number four and five spots. Zhou overcame Visic 6-2, 6-4 while Oyama defeated Quiroz, 6-2, 6-4.
Curry and Ghinga's matches went unfinished at three and two singles. Both had gotten to three sets before the match was clinched.
The team will continue Lone Star Conference play on Friday, March 26, against Cameron. The battle is set for 1 p.m. at Streich-Henry Complex in Lawton, Oklahoma.
