WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State was very close to revenging their previous lost against Oklahoma Christian on Saturday. The team put up a season-high 27 shots against the Eagles with one finding the back of the net. OC was also able to score and after two overtime periods, the game concluded in a 1-1 draw at Stang Park.
Valentina Carvajal started MSU off with two back-to-back shots in the first ten minutes. The senior forward was one of the team's leaders for shots with three.
Emma Baley was the first to test Oklahoma Christian's keeper, Gabby Goddard, with her fast shot to the bottom left. Goddard made the save for the Eagles.
On the visiting team's first shot of the game, Grace Cornelius rocked the ball into the top netting, right through
Taylor Camp's gloves. OCU stood up by one goal with 25 minutes left to play in the first half.
Avery Lewis, playing significantly more minutes since her coming back from injury, put up four of her five total shots in the first half. One of these was on goal and added another save for Goddard.
The home side ended the first half with eight shots and no saves versus Oklahoma Christian's four shots and two saves. Both teams recorded one corner kick.
Down by one, Midwestern State began the second half with a push to find the equalizer. The chance came from the team's first corner of the new half.
Alyssa Salinas stepped up to take it and floated the ball perfectly on the six.
Reece Wildt jumped up above her defender and rammed the ball into the net for the Mustangs to come level with the opposition.
Now, the team pushed to score the game-winner. The closest Midwestern State would get was a shot off the left post by
Julia Orozco. The senior had three total shots for the game.
Senna Garcia added two shots to the total in the second half, with one on goal.
The Eagles' lone shot of the half came from Cornelius, which Camp easily saved. With the final whistle, the teams headed into overtime, searching for the golden goal.
The first OT period saw MSU continue to push. The team put up four shots and held OCU at zero. One of the four shots was from
Kelly Cannistra, who banged another off the left woodwork. The senior midfielder had three shots in her 92 minutes.
Overtime came and went without any goals. The second period had two shots from each team, with Camp registering two saves from Jenna White and Hazel Carson. Cannistra and Lewis attempted for Midwestern State. MSU finished with 27 shots with seven on goal, 3 saves, and 11 corners. Oklahoma Christian put up seven shots with four on goal, five saves, and one corner kick.
The Mustangs will hit the road for their last away game of the regular season. The team takes on Texas Woman's in Denton, Texas on Wednesday, March 24. The Lone Star Conference match is set to kick off at 6 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
