DENTON, Texas – Corner kicks proved lucky for Midwestern State in their midweek game at Texas Woman's. After being down by two multiple times in the match, the Mustangs rallied back but in the end fell 2-3 in Denton, Texas.
Taylor Camp made three early saves for MSU, but tragedy struck soon after. TWU's first goal came early with Kaylee Rekieta's cross to Haley Ward. Ward was able to slip it past
Taylor Camp to put the Pioneers up on the board.
The home side stuck again, this time from the corner. Jazmine Navarro's kick floated over everyone's head and into the top right corner of the goal. Within the first ten minutes, Texas Woman's had two goals and Midwestern State had some catching up to do.
Tatum Sharp registered the first shot for the Mustangs, which was saved by Bailey Heffernon. A few minutes later, the tides began to turn for the visitors. Following the corner kick taken by
Valentina Carvajal, the senior received a cleared ball on the outside of the field. She made a deep cross towards the goal that found the head of
Avery Lewis to put the team in the scorebook. The combination provided Lewis' first goal of the year and Carvajal's first assist as well.
The score now at 1-2, MSU tried to put another in before halftime, but were unsuccessful. The Mustangs recorded two shots in the first half with three saves and one corner. TWU put up six shots with one save and two corner kicks.
Another misfortune struck Midwestern State early in the second period. A foul provided the Pioneers with a free kick a few feet over the midline. Texas Woman's played the ball in and another foul in the box gave them a penalty kick. Senior Lexi D'Abrosca, who buried it top shelf, took the 54th minute opportunity. Now, MSU stood down by two again with 36 minutes left to play.
Sharp tried another shot but forced a save from Heffernon. Camp also put in two more saves to keep the score stable.
Cassidy Savoy added a shot in the 74th minute to help her team.
A corner kick at 80:17 proved to be the Mustangs' saving grace. Carvajal stepped up to take the kick again and drilled it into the mix.
Hannah Morrison's head connected with the ball and it found the back of the net. Morrison tallied her first goal at Midwestern State and Cavarjal had her second assist of the night.
The two goals improved the team's most goals in a single game for the season. Had there been more time left in the game, the team might have added a third. But as it stood, TWU walked away with their second win of the season. The Pioneers had seven shots, two saves, and two corners for the half while the Mustangs put up three shots, two saves, and three corners. MSU falls to 1-4-1 overall and a 1-2-1 LSC record.
Midwestern State will commence the regular season at home in Wichita Falls. The team takes on Texas A&M-Commerce on Wednesday, March 31, at Stang Park. Kick off for the Lone Star Conference match is set for 5 p.m.
