OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Midwestern State's early goal by
Emma Baley was not enough to lift the team over Oklahoma Christian in the Wednesday night match. The Eagles put in two more goals in the first half to drop the Mustangs to a 1-4 season record after the 1-2 drop on the road. MSU's conference record sits at 1-2 with three more matches to play this semester.
The Mustangs struck the Eagles quick with Baley's goal in only the seventh minute of the match. The junior stuck with a low center ball out of reach from Gabby Goddard after a pass from
Hannah Morrison. This put Baley at her first tally of the season and third in her career. Morrison recorded her first assist and point as a Mustang.
Celebrations for MSU did not last long as less than a minute later, OCU found the equalizer through a low shot by Grace Cornelius from Brianna Concienne. Within ten minutes, both teams found the back of the net and had lots of game left to play.
Kelly Cannistra put her foot through the ball three times with two forcing saves from Goddard. Baley added another in the 13th minute and
Valentina Carvajal tried at the 16:49 mark. Unfortunate that the team could not convert on these chances.
Thalia Delgado tried to sneak one past
Taylor Camp in the 17th minute and the Midwestern State keeper made the save. The home side were able to convert on their third shot of the game when Ellise Foreman scored what would end up being the game winner. Concienne tallied her second assist of the game.
The visitors put up two more shots before the halftime whistle sounded. The Mustangs had nine shots with eight on goal for the first period while the Eagles totaled four shots with only three on goal. Both teams grabbed two corner kicks while OC keeper had seven saves versus Camp's one.
Down by one, Midwestern State journeyed to find at least one more point.
Alex Sandlin put in a shot to the right side of the frame that was saved by the goalkeeper and another in the 54th minute. Forward
Avery Lewis registered her first two shots of the year in the second half in attempt to put MSU up on the board again.
In the end, the team could not find the back of the net in the second and the home side took the game. Carvajal led both teams with five shots for the game and three on goal. Sandlin also took five shots and put four of them on frame. Camp recorded three saves in her 90 total minutes. Goddard protected the net with 17 total saves for the Eagles, with ten coming in the second half.
MSU put up 16 shots in the second half with ten on goal. They also had seven corners while OCU did not take any. The Mustang defense held the opponents to only two shots in the second half.
Fortunately, Midwestern State can get timely revenge as the two teams meet up again on Saturday, March 20. The 3 p.m. Lone Star rematch will be a home game for MSU at Stang Park.
