WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State's six game winning streak was snap on Wednesday night by Southeastern Oklahoma at Mustangs Park. The team fell by only two runs in the 1-3 first game and dropped game two 1-9 in five innings.
Kaitlyn Turner started on the mound for the Mustangs with her eighth match of the year. The freshman sits at 6-2 after pitching six innings with eight hits, three runs and six strikeouts.
Addi Hanna came in for relief in the seventh, allowing one hit and no runs.
Kady Fryrear scored off a hit by Cheyenne Mahy after an error by MSU. Turner stuck out the next two batters to end the first, only down by one.
Carson Solis and
Mattye Tyler both registered a hit in the bottom of the first inning. Solis ended the game with two hits from her four at bats. Tyler added two more to her hitting streak to grab 14 straight games, including game one and two against SOSU.
The Savage Storm added their final two runs in the second, started by a double to right center by Alexis Lambert. A single up the middle put the visitors up by three going into the bottom of the second.
Anna Williams singled up the middle for her eighth hit of the season. Unfortunately, the team could not drive her in and stranded the junior on base. Neither team was able to score in the next inning, but
Ashley Turner doubled to right center for her sixth double and 22nd hit this season.
The Mustangs finally put a score on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning when A. Turner singled to shortstop to push
Hanna Hetherington in home. Hetherington collected her 13th hit of the season on Wednesday.
The team could not put another past Southeastern Oklahoma and fell for the first time at home this season. Midwestern State had hopes to turn things around in the second half of the double header, but could not avail.
Hanna put in a three-inning effort on the mound for the Mustangs before
Kathryn Wells replaced her for the last two. Wells managed two runs off one hit and only one walked batter.
The first inning ended scoreless for the two teams. The Savage Storm scored two in the top of the second that were responded to by a
Jacey Henry left field solo home run. The junior currently leads her team in home runs (6) and is second in the conference before the Wednesday games.
SOSU put five more runs in during the third inning to go up by six. Despite hits by various Mustang players and only allowing one more run in the fourth, MSU could not rally back. The game ended 9-1 in five innings.
Midwestern State can bounce back on Friday with a double header against St. Mary's (Texas). The team will head south to San Antonio for two Lone Star Conference games on March 12, at 4 and 6 p.m.
