Mustangs Edge Out Nebraska-Kearney with Two Ashley Turner Homers

LUBBOCK, Texas – A big fourth inning, fueled by Ashley Turner, heeds Mustang victory over the University of Nebraska-Kearney. The second game of the Lubbock Sports College Invitational went 7-6 in favor of MSU at Lubbock Christian School on Saturday.

Turner started the game off with an early homer in the first and helped MSU to the 1-0 lead. Anna Williams followed suit in the second with a homer to left field.

The Lopers were held scoreless for three straight innings thanks to Mustang pitcher, Kaitlyn Tuner. She had six strikeouts in five innings.

The fourth was quite the scoring spree for both teams. Nebraska-Kearney turned in three runs by Kaylee Schutte, Bri Healy, and Avery Wood.

A single by Brooke Taylor gave Jacey Henry leeway to home. Taylor scored off a single to the right side by Carson Solis who was batted in by Turner's big homer. The Mustangs were up 7-3 going into the fifth inning.

UNK popped in three runs in the sixth inning, bringing the score within one of Midwestern State. Abbie Vodicka doubled to left field allowing Carly Dembowski to score. A sacrifice fly by Katie Gosker pushed Vodicka in. Carlee Leisch was the last in for Nebraska-Kearney.

Fortunately, pitcher Addi Hanna and the rest of the Mustang defense were able to close out the game in the seventh. Hanna had zero runs and zero hits in two innings.

Kaitlyn Turner earned the win for MSU with six runs on nine hits in five innings. Kelsey Goodban took the loss for the Lopers with seven runs on six hits in four innings.

MSU is 1-1 in the tournament after falling earlier in the day to Washburn.

The Mustangs finish the Lubbock Sports College Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 6, against Newman (Kan.) at 1 p.m. and Fort Hays State at 5 p.m.
