LUBBOCK, Texas -- Jacey Henry and
Brooke Taylor launched solo homers and Midwestern State rallied with two runs in the seventh in the season opener Friday afternoon in the Lubbock Sports College Invitational at Plains Capital Park.
But it wasn't enough to overtake Washburn as the Ichabods came away with a 6-4 win.
Washburn freshman Jenna Moore broke open a scoreless game with a triple down the right-field line to drive in the first run of the season, then scored on a fielder's joins to give the Ichabods a 2-0 lead through four innings.
WU added a single run in the fifth before plating three runs when freshman Cailey Oldemeyer delivered a bases loaded, bases clearing triple to left field in the sixth to give the 'Bods a 6-2 edge.
Midwestern State used the long ball to crack scoreboard when Taylor launched a 1-1 offering over the left-field fence in the fifth inning. Henry drilled another solo shot to left field in the sixth.
The Mustangs put the tying run in scoring position in the top of the seventh.
Carson Solis laced a one-out single up the middle, then the Mustangs loaded the bases after
Ashley Turner and
Bailey Brenek drew consecutive walks.
Mattye Tyler followed with a double down the right-field line to plate two runs, but Washburn freshman Ashlie Thissen retired the next two Midwestern State hitters to close out the game.
Solis and Tyler accounted for two hits each to lead the MSU attack, while Maddie Stipsits went 3-for-4 to lead the Ichabods.
Raegen Hamm earned the win for Washburn allowing two runs on four hits in six innings, while Henry took the loss for the Mustangs yielding six runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Midwestern State takes on Nebraska-Kearney Friday afternoon before closing the tournament against Newman (Kan.) and Fort Hays State (Kan.) Saturday at 1 and 5 p.m., respectively.
