COMMERCE, Texas -- Midwestern State could not grab the sweep at the Monday night game at Texas A&M-Commerce. The Mustangs fell in a disappointing 110-81 route against the number 15 team in the country.
Midwestern State started the game strong with two back to back baskets from senior guard
Morgan Lenahan and a
Frances King tre ball before the Lions could grab a bucket.
King finished with 14 and five assists but had limited time because of foul trouble.
With a second blink the Mustangs were up 9-3 with a clutch three from
Kityana Diaz. The senior forward put up an 11 point performance going 50% from the field, and one for one in threes.
Of Commerce's 18 first quarter points, seven (39%) came from free throws with fouls hurting Midwestern State.
The second quarter was a little messy on both ends with only three baskets scored in the first three and a half minutes. This included a layup by junior forward
Shawnisay Millar and two layups by Asiyah Smith for the Lions.
Millar ended with ten points, including 100 percent on free throws in her best offensive game in over a month.
Senior forward
Hannah Reynolds added two points for the quarter and ended with four total. The Prosper, Texas, native grabbed a season-high nine rebounds against the Lions and tied her season record blocks with six.
Lenahan led the Mustangs for the quarter with five points and for the game with 24 points, including swishing six of her seven free throws. Her best quarter was the third were she put down 11 of the 23.
Dyani Robinson helped Commerce garner a six lead by halftime with 11 points in the second. The biggest hurt for Midwestern was turnovers as they gave up 16 in the first half with Commerce gaining 21 points from the TOs.
The Lions came into the second half swinging and went on an 8-0 to push the lead to 52-38. Although the Mustangs went on an 8-5 run with 2:15 left in the third, the push was not quite enough. MSU went into the final period down 61-73.
The fourth period started on the downside for Midwestern State as the opposition scored 10 straight without an answer until a field goal by Diaz.
The Mustangs went 11-15 on free throws in the final five minutes of the game with four players chipping in, including Millar, Lenahan,
Mandy Withey, and
Eternity Jackson.
Unfortunately, the throws could not overcome and Texas A&M-Commerce topped Midwestern State 110-81. This is the most points the Mustangs have ever given up in team history. The 10-5 Midwestern State close out the regular season with their last home game against UT Permian Basin on Thursday, Feb. 25, in a two-game home and away series. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
