WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State grabs another home win to make it 10-0 for the streak in the 61-47 defeat of UT Permian Basin at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The Thursday night rumble makes the Mustangs 11-5 before heading into their last regular season game.
"We'll definitely take this result any day of the week. It wasn't pretty though," said head coach
Christopher Reay.
After the first period of play, MSU trailed UTPB by three, scoring 13 in the quarter. The second quarter was a big push as the home squad pounded out 21 points and held the visitors to ten.
Senior
Morgan Lenahan recorded her third game in a row with 20 plus points, scoring 25 in the match and adding eight defensive rebounds and four assists. Her eleven made field goals are a season-high for the 5-11 guard.
The Haddonfield, N.J., native was three of nine behind the arc, which dips below her average of 4.4 per game. However, she still registered the most triples for the Mustangs.
"She [Lenahan] is a little frustrated with herself on her threes, but she attacked well still," Reay said. "I don't know how she didn't get to the free-throw line; I thought she should have had a few trips."
Frances King helped Lenahan with free throws, going five out of six from the line. The sophomore guard, staying out of foul trouble in the game, rounded out the night with nine points and eight boards.
"Frances was a little disappointed with her stat line, but she had a good game," commented Reay.
King, the team leader in assists, found her teammates six times during Thursday's game. This ties her season record helpers that occurred against Cameron (Dec. 11) and Angelo State (Feb. 20).
Fellow guard,
Kityana Diaz twinned with nine points as well, landing her sixth three of the year.
On the boards,
Mandy Withey was a beast grabbing 13 for the Mustangs.
"Mandy came in with some minutes and had a good game on the boards today. She had thirteen boards and we need needed that," Reay said.
The sophomore forward made season history in rebounds (13), blocks (2), and threes (1). Fellow forward,
Hannah Reynolds recorded three blocks and five rebounds for Midwestern State.
A dismal third quarter kept the Falcons within reach with the Mustangs shooting 23 percent from the field and 20 percent from deep. However, Midwestern State put it away with a 16-8 final period, going 6-16 on field goals.
Thursday's win put MSU in a great spot for the Lone Star Conference post-season tournament. With a W in their next game against UTPB, the Mustangs claim third in the conference standings and a home playoff game. If the team loses, they can still place third, but only if West Texas A&M beats Lubbock Christian.
With that, Midwestern will head to Odessa, Texas, to take on UT Permian Basin in the last game of the regular season. Tip-off starts at 2 p.m. at the Falcon Dome on Saturday, Feb. 27.
