Mustangs roll on to nine game home win streak with win over Angelo State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Midwestern State still rides their at home unbeaten streak with an 81-62 defeat over Angelo State on Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. A standout performance from Morgan Lenahan set the home record at 6-0 for this season and 9-0 since February 2020.

The home team started on the down side with Angelo State running 4-0 off two points each from Sawyer Lloyd and Sadie Misner. The visitors upped the lead to 7-2 with 8:14 left in the first.

Then Lenahan and the rest of the team turned up the heat. The senior guard led the Mustangs with 29 points, a season-high record, which previously sat at 25 from the West Texas A&M game this year. Lenahan also ended the game with two rebounds and two steals.

Junior guard Haevyn Risley and Kityana Diaz each had a steal in the first period. Diaz and Frances King totaled two steals each. For the game, MSU 19 points from ASU's 18 turnovers into points while the visitors could only gain 16 points from 17 upsets.

The first quarter was close throughout and ended 25-24 with Midwestern State up by one going into the second quarter.

The Mustangs found their groove and lead for most of the second until the game was tied 37 all with 2:55 left to play. Then the home squad went on an 8-1 run to push to 45-38 at the half. Lenahan scored five of the eight with Diaz contributing a clutch three.

The senior forward was four of seven from the floor and one for two behind the arc. She added five rebounds too.

The momentum stuck with MSU into the second half as they continued the run for 22 more points. King had three of the 22 and gave seven for the game. The sophomore guard led the Mustangs in assists with six and counted four rebounds.

Midwestern State held Angelo State to just 20 percent field goal shooting for the third quarter, which helped them to a 69-49 lead.

The offensive surge helped the Mustangs to a 25-point lead in the final period. Junior forward Shawnisay Millar added a couple of points to the run and totaled ten points for the game. She also had six rebounds, only behind Mandy Withey who had ten.

Withey, who has been slowly returning from injury, ended the night with eight points.

In the end, the deficit was too much for ASU to overcome and MSU won out 81-62. Misner was the leading scorer for the Belles with 25 points followed by Lloyd with 11.
