Mustangs fall victim to No. 9 Central Oklahoma in season opener

EDMOND, Okla. – There was heartbreak for the Mustangs on the night before Valentine's Day as No. 9 Central Oklahoma buried No. 16 Midwestern State 7-0 at Oak Tree Country Club in the first test of MSU's season.

Originally, the schedule had the team slated to take on McMurry and Hardin-Simmons for the first two matches, but the frigid weather canceled the Abilene competitions.

The lone win of the this match for the Mustangs came from the doubles duo Anda Ghinga/Emilija Visic. They won 7-5 against UCO's Mae Canete and Paola Landin. Last season, Visic went 4-4 in doubles with a 1-1 mark at the top spot.

On the singles side, No. 29 Dunlap went head to head against No. 43 Casie Curry. Curry fought hard to win the Mustangs a point, but eventually fell 3-6, 4-6. Curry finished the 2020 season 5-5 in singles play.

Tiffany Hollebeck faced off against No. 26 Adel-Byanu Abidullina at the number one singles spot. Central Oklahoma took the stage again with a 6-4, 6-3 victory. Hollebeck, a transfer from SMU, is in her first season with Midwestern State.

Overall, the Mustangs control the all-time record versus the Bronchos. The series is now at 17-14-2, which started in the 1981 season. This will make the second year that MSU took a beat from No. 9 ranked UCO.
