Mustangs squander sweep against Cameron

LAWTON, Okla. – The heartbreak availed Friday night as the Mustangs fell 2-3 (25-21, 25-27, 24-26, 25-12, 13-15) to Cameron in the two-game series. The Lone Star Conference match was down to the nail, with the home squad winning out at Aggie Gym in the Red River Rivalry. MSU split the series 1-1 with the Aggies.

Despite the eventual distress, Midwestern State started hot on the floor. The first set was a nail biter, but the visitors won it out 25-21. A 7-1 run, highlighted by three Keetyn Davis kills, gave the Mustangs the push they needed. The freshman outside hitter registered ten kills for the night, along with a .286 kill percentage.

She and senior defensive specialist Jaycie Fuller each had 16 digs, leading their team. Fuller led both teams with six service aces.

Three straight block assists by Lissette Lefforge propelled the squad to the W. The senior middle hitter had four total blocks and four kills.

The second set, though just as hard fought, fell away from MSU by two points (27-25). Sophomore outside hitter Kaitlynn Stoker had five kills in the second and 15 total. Freshman Autumn Roach assisted all five of Stoker's kills, gaining 24 total assists. Fellow setter, sophomore Kaitlyn Masseth also had 24 assists for the game.

Momentum carried the Aggies into the third set and helped them win another 26-24. Freshman outside hitter Lauryn Bourné hit six kills in the third and 21 total. She led the game in kills (21) and attacks (47) and gained a .255 hitting percent.

Cameron's outside hitter Alanni Carter was the biggest threat of the Aggie offense. She registered five kills in set 3 and 13 total, with a hitting percent of .226.
The Mustangs came back in the fourth and destroyed the home side 25-12. MSU hit a major 12-2 run in the middle that Cameron could not come back from. Senior right side hitter Raven Presley, Davis, and Bourné each had two hits in this run.

Midwestern State battled in the final set, but fell 13-15 to end the game. Walia Franklin led the Aggies with .414 hitting percentage and the team had 14 total blocks.

The 4-2 Mustangs follow  up with a match against Western New Mexico on Wednesday, Feb. 17. First serve is set for 6 p.m. at D.L. Ligon Coliseum in Wichita Falls.
