WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Mustangs start strong, but cannot hold off Oklahoma Christian in first of home series on Tuesday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. After winning the first two sets, the home team succumbed the last three to drop 2-3 (25-15, 25-13, 24-26, 18-25, 13-15) in a Lone Star Conference West Division match-up.
Despite the eventual distress, Midwestern State started on a roll, going up 4-0 before the Eagles could blink. Freshman Lauryn Bourné tallied two kills in the rally. She led both teams in kills (15) and topped MSU with 21 digs for the night, both season records for the outside hitter.
Sophomore
Kaitlyn Masseth aided Bourné's kills, going for 25 assists and added three service aces and ten digs to the mix. Both aces and digs were season highs for the setter.
The set was back and forth but back-to-back kills by freshman middle
Alyssa Estrada-Hamby propelled the Mustangs to the 25-15 W. She lead MSU hitters with a .278 kill percentage going eight for 18 in kills.
Midwestern state rallied in the second to overcome a four-point deficit to start out. A 9-0 run with senior
Lissette Lefforge serving was just the push the squad needed. In the run, Lefforge added one of her two service aces of the night, a high for the season. The middle blocker totaled seven kills, three digs, and three block assists for the Mustangs.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Stoker's four kills in this run were also beneficial and the outside hitter added six more throughout the rest of the match. She and the rest of the Mustangs grabbed the second set 25-13.
Being up 2-0, Midwestern State went into the third set ready to end the match. It looked as if they would too with the team leading most of the set and up 23-19. A 7-1 run by the Eagles thwarted the plan and put the visitors back into the game.
Kelsie Schiefelbein's 11 block assists and Morgan Demuth's .353 attack percentage carried Oklahoma Christian.
Attack errors were the downfall for MSU in the next to last set with an 11-0 run by the Eagles impossible to overcome and the visitors pushed a final set with the 25-18 score.
Midwestern State went down fighting for the fifth and the set was a nail biter.
Keetyn Davis recorded one hit in the set and four total. On the defensive end, she and senior
Jaycie Fuller registered 17 and 16 digs, respectfully. Fuller garnered two season highs with five assists and four aces, leading both teams in service aces.
In the end, Oklahoma Christian overcame 15-13.
The Mustangs go for revenge on the Eagles on Wednesday at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. The squad will attempt to up their record of 4-3, with the first serve slated for 6 p.m.
