WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- In less than 10 minutes,
Kelly Cannistra and
Isabella Cruz changed Midwestern State's fate with a goals in the final seconds of regulation and the first overtime period to take down Texas Woman's by 2-1. The Mustangs reach 11-3-3 on the season while conducting a 8-1-3 Lone Star Conference record.
Though TWU out struck MSU by 23 shots to 14, Midwestern State came away to secure second place in the LSC. This is the team's best finish since 2013 when they were co-conference champs with Angelo State.
The Mustangs converted eight of 14 attempts on goal with
Lexi Beck leading the pack with four shots in 100 minutes. Stephanie Garcia topped the Pioneers with 10 shots in her 81-minute performance.
Maddy Harper scored the opening goal only four minutes into the match on an assist form Jazmine Navarro. The home side was stunned, but fought back with Cannistra's sixth tally of the year at 89:38. A corner kick with 30 seconds left in the match found the ball in TWU's box. After it was played in, multiple Mustang shots bounced around the 6-yard box until the senior came away with the game-tying goal to force overtime.
For Cruz's second straight match with a tally,
Cassidy Savoy laid the ball off for the freshman's long range attempt. It sailed past Morgan Sherman's dive to collect Cruz's sixth point of the season.
On the defensive side,
Lauren Freeman grabbed a season-best eight saves against 23 shots for a 0.889 save percent. The keeper's goals against average sits a 0.79 for the year while she totals 28 stops. Sherman put in four saves for Texas Woman's.
Midwestern State will conclude the regular season on the road at Angelo State on Saturday, Nov. 6. The Lone Star Conference battle will commence at 1 p.m. at ASU Soccer Field in San Angelo, Texas.
