WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State's
Terrell Wilson poured in a game-high 21 points allowing the Mustangs to overcome hard charging Colorado State-Pueblo 77-64 in the Ashbrook Classic Saturday night at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Mustangs, who evened their early season record at 1-1, allowed a 20-point to dwindle away before scoring nine consecutive points to re-establish a double-digit lead with three minutes to play.
Colorado State-Pueblo junior Elijah Moleon, a Killeen native, scored 20 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in his return to Texas and was clearly in the center of the Thunderwolves' second-half surge.
CSU-Pueblo outscored the Mustangs 24-5 over a nearly 11-minute span fueled by 11 points from Moleon whose dunk at the 6:26 mark pulled the Thunderwolves within 59-58.
But Wilson ignited the 9-0 run with a layup in transition before sophomore
Pierre Sanders weaved his way through the paint for another layup.
Luke Hamilton drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the key before Wilson bookended with another driving layup to give the Mustangs a 68-58 lead with 3:09 to play.
Midwestern State held the Thunderwolves without a field goal over the final 6 1/2 minutes to seal the victory.
Sanders finished with 13 points and nine rebounds as the Mustangs out boarded Colorado State-Pueblo, 52-30.
Senior
Jalin Brown was also strong on the glass finishing with 10 points and eight rebounds, while senior
Jermane Carter finishing with nine points and grabbed 10 of his 11 rebounds on the offensive end of the floor.
Carter also provided the highlight of the night toss a ball off of the glass for a two-handed slam late in the first half.
Freshmen Lian Ramiro and Micah Lamberth added 18 and 17 points, respectively, for Colorado State-Pueblo which dropped to 0-2.
Midwestern State takes on Central Oklahoma Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
