WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Midwestern State had a good bead on Central Oklahoma Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
The Mustangs needed to force the Bronchos' defense to react then swing the ball to back side of the defense for open shots.
Jamey Sanders and
Luke Hamilton did exactly that burying four 3-pointers each to finish with 14 points in an 86-65 win.
"Give
Jamey Sanders a lot of credit. That was a big time game," MSU coach
Justin Leslie said. "And Luke hit four 3s, as well. That was we needed to break this open. That was what they were going to force us to do. That's what we had to be prepared to go out and play."
Sanders finished in double digits for the second time in his first three games with the Mustangs as the junior transfer from Southwest Tennessee Community College upped his season average to 11.3 points per game.
"I am really excited to see how his career unfolds here. He is a shot maker," Leslie said. "He is just beginning to scratch the surface of who he can be and what he can do. As he learns our system a little better, he is only going to improve. I am really pleased we added him to the program. He's a wonderful teammate."
The teams went point for point in the first half with the Mustangs hitting 65 percent from the field to hold a narrow 44-41 edge at the break as Central Oklahoma managed to shoot 55 percent to stay close.
"I was very pleased with our defensive execution," Leslie said. "Our task was going in and taking the shots they want. Each team is trying to get a specific look from a specific player."
MSU stepped up the defensive pressure in the second half limiting the Bronchos to 26.7 percent shooting from the field hitting just one of their 14 3-point attempts.
The defensive pressure allowed the Mustangs to pull away using a 16-4 from the under-16 media timeout until
Terrell Wilson connected on a pair of free throws to push the MSU advantage to 73-55 with 8:37 to play.
"That was a really fun one. I'm not going to lie," Leslie said. "I've always followed along and admired (UCO coach Bob Hoffmann's) teams over the years. It was something I was excited for because they are very well-coached team. They have a very specific scheme of how they tag and rotate defensively."
Midwestern pushed the lead to a game-high 21 points finishing its scoring with 3-pointers by
Jalin Brown, Hamilton and
Terrell Wilson with just over two minutes to play.
Wilson also finished with 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting with three 3-pointers while dishing out a team-high five assists, while senior
Jermane Carter scored 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting.
In all, the Mustangs connected on 14 3-pointers on 26 attempts, while shooting 57 percent from the field.
Camryn Givens scored 17 points to lead Central Oklahoma which suffered its first loss of the season to fall to 3-1.
Midwestern State hits the road to take on No. 3 West Texas A&M Monday night at First United Bank Center in Canyon. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
