Mustangs battle TAMIU to 2-all draw

WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Randi Heaton and Kelly Cannistra both collect scores in Midwestern State's fifth overtime match of the year. Though the Mustangs notched the double tally, Texas A&M International found their way back to tie at 2-2 in double OT. MSU reaches a 5-2-3 record overall and remains undefeated in Lone Star Conference play at 2-0-3.

Heaton's goal was earned early in the match, completed at the 1:06 time stamp. Cannistra earned the first corner for Midwestern State to jump start the offense. Alyssa Salinas stepped up to take the kick and launched it into the Javelinas' six yard box. After a scramble, Heaton buried the ball past Fabiana Solano for her fourth notch of the season.

TAMIU's Vivian Martinez earned her first tally of the season when the visitors jumped back to tie in the 13th minute.

Following the level goal, Midwestern State registered a whooping three shots bounce off the cross bar. Cassidy Savoy, Lexi Beck and Isabella Cruz were all inches away from completing the Mustangs' second goal of the night. However, neither team could break the tie and the score stayed 1-1 going into halftime.

Solano made six saves for Texas A&M International when facing 13 of MSU's first half shots. Taylor Camp did not see any action nor was tested by TAMIU's four shots.

Cannistra grabbed her second goal of 2021 after intercepting a pass in Midwestern State's half and charging toward Solano. She dished off to Beck who dropped it back to Cannistra in a run in the 18 yard box. With a move around Solano, the senior gave the Mustangs their second lead of the match. Beck landed her second helper and sixth point in her freshman year run.

The Javelinas weren't down for long as Irene Robles ripped the second equalizer in the 61st minute. MSU made 12 attempts in the second half to find the game-winner, but could not prevail. Camp made six stops on Texas A&M International's nine shots. Solano made seven saves.

In both overtime periods, Midwestern State found two shots to total 27 on the match. Beck and Savoy led with five and four attempts a piece. The visitors made 14 kicks toward goal with Vivian Martinez gaining seven.

The Mustangs hit the road on Wednesday, Oct. 13 to battle UT Permian Basin in another Lone Star Conference face-off. The UTPB Turf Field in Odessa, Texas, wil act as host to the Mustangs and the Falcons. Kick-off is set for 5 p.m.
