Savoy and Resendez complete braces in 5-1 dominance over UTPB

ODESSA, Texas -- Marissa Resendez and Cassidy Savoy were the big scorers in Midwestern State's Wednesday night 5-1 beat down over UT Permian Basin. Each player tallied two goals with Savoy adding an assist. With the win at UTPB Turf Field, the Mustangs move to 6-2-3 overall and keep their undefeated streak in Lone Star Conference play (3-0-3).

Resendez notched the first tally early with a Savoy beating her defender down the sideline and crossing across UTPB's six yard box. The forward completed a cheeky back heel to trick the Falcon defenders and move the ball past Jenna McEnaney. The 1:46 tally was Resendez's second goal of the season.

Kelly Cannistra registered her second straight match with a goal in the 14th minute. From a corner kick, McEnaney misjudged the ball and Cannistra fell in the right place at the right time. The senior only need a small touch on the front post to put MSU up by two. The midfielder took three shots and landed all three on target.

Midwestern State did not ride the lead for long as UT Permian Basin put one in less than a minute later. Following a foul on the Mustangs deep in their half, Uareli Barrera's long range free kick sailed over Taylor Camp's outstretched hands and into the upper corner of the goal.

Savoy posted her first goal in the 23rd minute on an assist from Emma Baley. Baley's cross to the box found Savoy's head to put the visitors up by two again. Baley collected her second helper of the season while Savoy gained goal number three.

The remainder of the half went scoreless for both teams. McEnaney recorded one save for the Falcons while Camp did not have any for the Mustangs. MSU outshot UTPB 4-1 in the first half.

Emilia Nunez grabbed her first collegiate point with an assist to Savoy's second goal. At 72:07, Nunez intercepted a ball coming out from UT Permian Basin's defense to strike a low cross into Savoy at the back post. With the score, Savoy is tied with Randi Heaton for the Mustangs' top goal scorer. The sophomore put all three attempts on frame while Nunez had one shot on goal.

Resendez put the nail in the coffin with her 88th minute strike. For the match, the sophomore conducted three shots and gained two shots on goal in 39 minutes. Niocole Marsolek and Alyssa Salinas played all 90 minutes for Midwestern State.

Lauren Freeman played the full second half, but did not complete any saves for MSU. McEnaney added seven stops to total eight for the night. Overall, the Mustangs propelled 16 shots and put 13 on goal. The Falcons completed five tries with one on target.

Midwestern State returns to Stang Park for their seventh Lone Star Conference match of the 2021 season. The Mustangs take on Dallas Baptist on Saturday, Oct. 16 in Wichita Falls. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
